Raise your hand if you’ve ever been personally victimized by Regina George.
If you grew up in the mid-2000s and early 2010s, there’s a chance your sense of humor in part comes from Tina Fey’s “Mean Girls,” the 2004 cult classic comedy that gave us lines like “You go, Glen Coco,” “She doesn’t even go here!” and “It’s like I have ESPN or something.”
One of the movie’s most iconic quotes is even memorialized in an annual celebration of the best of Cady Heron, Aaron Samuels and the cold, shiny, hard Plastics.
When is "Mean Girls" Day?
It was the three-word answer heard ‘round the world. For both Cady Heron and an audience of smitten adolescents, nothing was the same after Aaron Samuels asked what day it was. The dead-pan interaction, happening at the height of Cady’s crush, goes a little something like this:
“On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was.”
“What day is it?”
“It’s October 3rd.”
The whole cut-away is about five seconds long but birthed a pop culture moment and memes to fuel us through the rest of the 2010s and beyond. It even makes an appearance in “Mean Girls on Broadway” in the song “Stupid With Love (Reprise)”:
“Hey, what’s the date?” Aaron asks.
“October 3rd,” Cady answers, saying to herself: “My new favorite day.”
Is there a National "Mean Girls" Day?
It doesn’t seem like the Biden administration is issuing a proclamation for a national holiday any time soon, but that doesn’t stop fans from trying to make "fetch" happen.
Daniel Franzese, who plays Damian (of the hilarious “Oh my god, Danny DeVito, I love your work!” line) celebrated the day by sharing his favorite Damian memes. Even Lohan, who plays “home-schooled jungle freak” Cady Heron posted a throwback on Oct. 3, 2021, to celebrate the famed interaction between Cady and Aaron.
Tina Fey and Busy Philipps (who will both star in the upcoming “Mean Girls” movie musical) also hosted a Facebook Live viewing party of the movie to celebrate on Oct. 3, 2019. Jonathan Bennett (Aaron Samuels), Franzese, Lohan, Amanda Seyfried (Karen Smith), Lizzy Caplan (Janis Ian), Lacey Chabert (Gretchen Weiners) and more also teamed up that year to raise money for clean water projects in Uganda with the hashtag #MeanGirlsDoGood.
Fans celebrate annually by rewatching the movie, sharing their favorite quotes on social media and wearing pink.
When is October 3?
Unfortunately, “Mean Girls” day doesn’t fall on a Wednesday in 2023, so you won’t be in true alignment with the Plastics’ “on Wednesdays we wear pink.” This year, Oct. 3 is on a Tuesday.
