Grey’s Anatomy Star Caterina Scorsone Saves Her 3 Kids in 2 Minutes in House Fire

Caterina Scorsone recently endured a terrifying tragedy.
The Grey's Anatomy star shared on April 3 that her house had burned down a couple of months ago. Recalling the incident, Caterina shared that she wasted no time getting her three daughters—Eliza, 10, Paloma "Pippa," 6, and Lucky, 3, whom she shares with ex-husband Rob Giles—to safety.
"While getting my kids ready for bed and finishing bath time, smoke began to seep up through the grout around the tub," Caterina wrote on Instagram. "When I looked down the hallway a river of thick black smoke had already formed and was filling the house. One thing about fires: they happen fast. I had about two minutes to get my three kids out of the house, and we escaped with less than shoes on our feet. But we got out."
After noting that she is "eternally grateful" they escaped, Caterina "heartbreakingly" revealed that they lost all four of their pets in the fire.
"We are still sitting with that loss," she noted, "but we are lucky we got to love them at all."
Caterina, who plays Dr. Amelia Shepherd on the ABC drama, added that she decided to share the story to give thanks to those who showed her and her family support amid a difficult experience, including her neighbor, firefighters and investigators. She didn't share the cause of the flames.
"This is a love letter to the incredible people that showed up and the incredible ways that they did," she wrote. "Thank you to the parents at my kids' school who sent toys and books, my friends at @greysabc and @shondaland who sent clothing and supplies, my sisters who flew in to handle logistics so that I could be with my kids."
Reflecting on the tragedy, Caterina said she has walked away with a lesson: "The only thing that matters are the people (and beings) that you love. The only thing that matters is community."
The 41-year-old paired her touching message with a photo of her home's remains after the fire, as well as pictures of their three cats and dog who passed on.
Caterina's post drew in love from some of her fellow Grey's Anatomy cast.
Jake Borelli, who plays Dr. Levi Schmitt, wrote in the comment section, "You are truly an incredible human and I am sending all the love I have to you and yours."
Meanwhile, Melissa DuPrey, who plays Dr. Sara Ortiz on the show, wrote, "Oh sweet babe. I'm so glad you all are safe. I'm sorry for the losses of your furbabies and the tangible things that hold memories. Grateful you are here and exist so beautifully."
